“The Weirdo From Another Planet treats samplers like vibraphones. This is the sort of musician who spends so much time woodshedding that the area around their house looks like a cymatic pattern. I first met him when he was working with Shadowtrash Tape Group, a label he started with Cecyl Ruehlen. They were running the only impressive experimental outlet in Boulder back then, and they did it for like five years, with international artists from every end of avant-garde culture.
They had this radio show, which was two hours long so to fill time for a while there he was making a new album every week or two.
I once saw The Weirdo hole up with a band in the studio of KVCU Radio 1190 for 48 hours during a snowstorm, pulling records from the station’s shelves and scratching them through an array of effects nonstop except for a couple of crash-and-burn catnaps. This was on some ‘days off’ during a period when their group Rumpilots was playing five-hour improvised shows every Friday.
He’s the kind of person who is more of a process than a human. You point him at art materials and he moves over them until they’re exhausted. Like a tide over rock.”
